The Division of Vascular Surgery of Padova University
(completely devoted to arterial revascularization procedures) makes 800
operations yearly, both for obliterative disease
(by-pass , endarterectomy) (abdominal aorta, iliac, femoro popliteal and tibial,
carotid, vertebral, supraortic trunks, renal
mesenteric, arteries) or for aneurysms (abdominal aorta, thoracoabdominal
aorta, descending thoracic aorta, visceral , peripheral).
An endovascular program started in 1999
Data from 2003 activity report 70 abdominal aortic aneurysm treated with an endoprosthesis
(infrarenal and suprarenal fixation); in the same
period 8 descending
thoracic aorta aneurysms , were sealed with an endoprosthesis
and 40 carotid stenosis were treated with Carotid
Angioplasty and Stenting using a cerebral protection
device.
Prof. G. DERIU experience concerns both
general ( also as Director and Surgeon of the small 200 beds Hospital Balbi Valier , Pieve di Soligo (Treviso),
1968) and
Vascular Surgery. In this field he is a pioner in
Italy.
Since 1971 he dedicated himself
completely to arterial surgery as first operator in more than 10.000 procedures
, developing new tactiques and techniques (vein
bypass protection from compression , routine use of a Linton patch in distal anastomosis of femoro-distal
bypasses; PTFE interposition membrane between an abdominal aortic prostheses
and duodenum or thoracic aorta and lung; temporary revascularization of renal
arteries to avoid renal insufficiency in thoraco-abdominal
aneurysms surgical treatment;
routine use of the patch after carotid endoarterectomy,
delayed routine insertion of the shunt during carotid revascularization
procedures).
Responsible of a Section for Vascular Surgery part of a General Surgery
University Division (1971 - 1985) he achieved in upgrading it into a Vascular
Surgery University Division , completely autonomous , with 30 beds and its own
2 operating rooms.

Prof. Deriu published more than 200 papers on
arterial surgery in peer review journals .
His fied of research actually concerns mainly
Endovascular surgery , Carotid surgery and Thoracoabdominal
aneurysms prevention of complication, and basic research on atherosclerotique
plaque.
